The Oscar Wilde House was the venue for the launch of Noreen Doody’s book, The influence of Oscar Wilde on W.B. Yeats. Hosted by the staff and faculty of American College Dublin, the event was attended by luminaries from the Irish cultural firmament, including Danny Osborne, the sculptor of the Oscar Wilde statue in Merrion Square, keynote speaker Declan Kiberd, Noreen Doody and many others. West End star Clodagh Long visits our musical theatre students
On Tuesday 13th November we welcomed the West End star Clodagh Long for an acting workshop with some of our musical theatre students. Besides her glittering career, Clodagh was the recipient of the famous Andrew Lloyd Webber bursary which afforded her the opportunity of gaining her masters in musical theatre at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Recent credits include: Jekyll and Hyde, The Sound of Music, The Commitments and Snow White It was a wonderful, insightful workshop, where Clodagh shared her talents and experiences with our young hopefuls wishing to follow in her footsteps. We were thrilled she made the trip from London and hope to have her back again soon.

New Student Orientation The American College Dublin welcomed a new incoming class of approximately 70 students earlier in September. The New Student Orientation took place on September 6th headed by Director of Admissions, Rowland Crawte, and David Webb, Registrar. New President Dr. Joseph Rooney was on hand to welcome the incoming class. Strategic Partnership The American College Dublin is developing a strategic partnership with CODE Institute, a Dublin based coding boot camp provider. ACD will operate the in-class delivery of the CODE program while CODE will focus on their on-line delivery. Cultural Nights Dublin For the first time in several years, the American College Dublin participated in Cultural Nights Dublin. The Oscar Wilde House served as a venue for performances relating to Oscar Wilde and even a Delta Blues performance by Jimmy O’Connell, Student Activities Coordinator. Welcome Back Reception
Oscar Wilde House Exterior Restoration
Scaffolding began to be erected over the entire exterior of the Oscar Wilde House in mid-September. The house was in serious need of plaster and paint work to restore it to its full grandeur. The work is expected to take about six weeks. While students and faculty have to deal with some disruption, the end result will be well worth it. The extensive exterior work is part of an ongoing restoration effort for the Oscar Wilde House. The work was made possible from a generous gift from Tina and Peter Flaherty, longtime supporters of the college. It is anticipated that part of the money donated will be used as seed money for the Flaherty Fund that will be used for additional restoration work. Planned tours of the house will also provide resourced for upkeep and maintenance.
Graduation
Dr. Joseph Rooney presided over his first Irish American University Graduation Ceremony as the new president on Wednesday, October 17th. The class of 2018 enjoyed musical interludes by the Performing Arts students under the direction of Deidre Masterson. The key note address was delivered by Congressman Thomas J. Rooney, brother of the president. Dr. Rory McEntegart presided over the commencement while Dr. Gerald Kean served as acting Chairman of the Board filling in for Seamus Mallon. The newly reinstated Honors Convocation was also part of the ceremony honoring the students who reached a high level of academic performance over the past year. Together, graduates and honorees celebrated their accomplishments culminating in a reception after the ceremony directed by student intern, Sonya Valadi.
