Student Life at American College Dublin

A community of care and creativity—right in the heart of Dublin

Life outside the classroom is essential to achieving your best academic results. At ACD, student life is deliberately designed to help you settle in, make friends, grow as a creator and scholar, and feel at home. We combine the American liberal arts tradition of intellectual curiosity with the rich traditions of Irish higher education to create a campus culture that is open, caring, and proudly international—where diversity is expected and respected.

A home in the heart of culture

Our campus at 1 Merrion Square, the childhood home of Oscar Wilde, places theatres, museums, galleries, music venues, and literary gatherings on your doorstep. With class sizes typically capped at 25–30, you are never a number; you are a valued member of a community where faculty and staff know you by name and support you to reach your potential.

What’s on: social & cultural life (highlights)

Student life at ACD is lively, welcoming, and wonderfully varied. Each term brings plenty of ways to meet people and make memories—from Karaoke Night, Board Game Night, and Trivia Night to our ever‑popular International Snack Night and Welcome Back Pub Night. If you enjoy creating, you’ll find Arts & Crafts sessions and “Let’s Make Vision Boards,” while the Horror Society meet‑up adds a playful edge to the calendar for fans of all things spooky. Our Student Forum Meetings are open to every student and focus on a first‑semester check‑in, what’s going well, what we can improve, and new ideas for student engagement—your chance to shape campus life directly.

There’s a strong literary and cultural thread running through the year. The Literary Society curates readings and a Short Story Contest, the LGBTQ+ Society hosts regular community meet‑ups, and we celebrate our setting with an Oscar Wilde Birthday gathering and an Oscar remembrance reflection later in the year. Beyond campus, you can step into Dublin’s cultural scene with “Tuesdays in Town” mini‑excursions and “Mondays at the Museum,” and even hop on the ever‑entertaining Ghost Bus Tour for a different view of the city’s past. We also mark Graduation Day together—an uplifting milestone for the whole community.

Academic and creative supports are woven into the social program so you can thrive in your courses while enjoying the city. Look out for essay‑writing workshops, themed Folklore Night discussions, and relaxed meet‑ups that make it easy to compare notes with classmates, unwind, and stay on top of deadlines.

Seasonal traditions keep the calendar fresh and festive. Autumn brings Halloween Movie Night and the big Halloween Party; winter features “Make an Ugly Christmas Jumper” and a cosy Fall Dinner; spring highlights include Valentine’s Arts & Crafts and Pancake Tuesday. Whether you’re exploring Dublin’s museums, swapping recipes at Snack Night, or cheering friends at karaoke, there’s always something on—come along, join in, and make ACD your home in the heart of the city.

Make the most of Dublin (and beyond)

ACD is uniquely placed for cultural immersion and professional networking. From lunchtime concerts and gallery talks to evening theatre runs and festivals, Merrion Square places you between the National Gallery, National Museum, and a thriving contemporary arts scene. Our Tuesdays in Town visits and weekend excursions make it simple (and affordable) to explore.
